Scottish Gemmological Association

Gem-Set Jewellery Design Competition 2012

Context of the Competition

The Scottish Gemmological Association exists to promote and develop interest in the science of gemmology and gem testing in Scotland.  The Association offers a jewellery competition specifically intended to encourage the use of gem materials in the work of the students in the jewellery departments of the Scottish Art Schools and Further Education Colleges.

The Brief

Design and manufacture an item of wearable gem-set jewellery.

Details

Applicants are required to register with the association on or before 9th DECEMBER 2011 and pay an entrance fee of £5.00 to enter the competition.  Students having difficulty sourcing gemstones may request assistance from the Scottish Gemmological Association.

The student should base the design of an item of jewellery round one or more gemstones.  Any natural or synthetic gemstone(s) may be the focus of the student’s finished piece. Each entry should be accompanied by an explanation of the piece.  This explanation will not form part of the marking criteria, but may assist the judges in understanding the design.

Criteria for Judging

The entries will be judged by a panel of jewellery professionals, who will use the following criteria in equal measure:

·         aesthetic design and originality;

·         quality of construction and finish;

·         professional application of stone setting techniques.

Students should bear in mind that the piece should be wearable and should emphasize the attributes of the gemstone(s).
